Celebrating Software Freedom Day in Nepal!

Software Freedom Day (SFD) is a worldwide celebration of Free and Open Source Software (FOSS). This celebration is to educate the worldwide public about the benefits of using high quality FOSS in education, in government, at home, and in business - in short, everywhere! The non-profit organisation Digital Freedom Foundation coordinates Software Freedom Day at a global level, providing support, giveaways and a point of collaboration, but volunteer teams around the world organize the local SFD events to impact their own communities. This year GBG Kathmandu is proud to be a celebrating partner in this event.

Our vision is to empower all people to freely connect, create and share in a digital world that is participatory, transparent, and sustainable.

In Nepal, FOSS Nepal Community has been regularly organising and celebrating Software freedom day since 2005. From 2007 to 2009, for three consecutive years, FOSS Nepal's SFD celebration was recognized as the best event in the world. For last three years FOSS Nepal had decentralised the celebration to meet local masses throughout the country. By letting the college FOSS communities and others individual organizations to organize individual event in their own places and colleges. This year FOSS Nepal is targeting to bring 5000 participants in Kathmandu in same hall to discuss, talk, interact and celebrate Software Freedom Day.

This year, in Nepal, we are celebrating SFD 2016 with a slogan, “FOSS, a building block to develop nation”. We have planned this event to be beneficial for people from different sectors closely related to IT. This event will have exhibition, stalls, book launches, entertainment, speeches from renowned figures and paper presentation on different hot topics like machine learning, big data, open data, cyber security & such by communities and companies in Nepal.
